The Springtime After — Western North Carolina Mountains

Warm spring mountain sunshine
Glowing on my face
This winter’s finally over
If April shows us grace

Hard winters never easy
But some are worse than most
When a hurricane comes inland
You just hang on your holy ghost

I’m lucky my house withstood it
Most of the holler had to flee
We stayed above the flood line
Kept the car up from the street

Some folks just had to move out
Most stayed, building back
Those left are bonded stronger now
After shouldering the attack

I helped get a tarp on a neighbor’s roof
He helped others with food to eat
Two ladies set up a share-a-ride
It was a group effort to clear the streets

I been to several funerals
Buried in muddy ground
Most died trying to cross the river
One body still ain’t been found

It’s settled down now, roads mostly clear
We done the best we could
Lots of work left, but we’re through the worst
At least there’s plenty of firewood
