50 Years of Assad Rule

Damascus’ central square, Syria, Friday, Dec. 13, 2024.
Syrians gather during a celebratory demonstration following the first Friday prayers since Bashar Assad’s ouster.

50 years of Assad rule
By Daddy and his son
Hafez coup’d to take the throne
Taught Bashir about guns

And double-dealing cruel intent
Crushing any whiff of dissent
Torture chambers heaven sent
Cement the Assad reign

When the Arab Spring arose in 2011
Bashir, like Daddy before him, wouldn’t listen
Instead he went on a killing spree
Welcome to the “Human Slaughterhouse,” Sednaya prison

Assads are from the Alawite sect
An offshoot of Shia Islam
While Sunni majority chafed at rule
Iranian patrons said “salaam”

In 2015, with Assad on his heels
Rebels seized cities in the north
Russia, flush with Ukraine gains
Proudly sallied forth

Carpet bombing civilian sites
See the vaunted Russian might
Bashir and Vladmir got so tight
They bombed the hospitals first

Then dropped some chlorine barrel bombs
The use of sarin gave no qualms
Not written in the book of Psalms
But God works in mysterious ways

Then tepid ceasefire lasted for years
Northern rebels greased their gears
Wiped away their grieving tears
Training for the day

And then the heavenly stars aligned
Russia and Iran in decline
Syrian Army lacking spine
So rebels swept down to Aleppo

Then Hamas, Homs, and on to Damascus
The Syrian Army blew all gaskets
And Bashir Assad, ever classless
Hopped a flight to Moscow

Not sure how Tulsi Gabbard will spin this
The Kremlin talking points are dimwit
Just Russian toxic greatest hits list
But that Tulsi can carry a tune

Now’s the time for the US to act
Work with Turkey and Arabs to stabilize fast
Let Russians get out, or rebels attack
I hope Trump doesn’t fuck this up
