My name is Dmytro Kovalenko
A proud Ukranian soldier
I just turned 18 years old
But somehow I feel older
My father died in war’s first week
When he rallied to the cause
I fight now for his legacy
For him I will be strong
I serve in Ukraine’s 24th Danylo Brigade
Fighting near Bakhmut
In trenches dug on hellscape earth
We fight the Russian Orcs
Constant Russian conscript waves
Get thrown into the grinder
Russia cares not for their men
I see the grim reminders
Guys show pics of wives and kids
Or girlfriends or their lovers
I don’t have any of these
I just miss my mother
Last month’s mud is freezing now
This war is getting old
Now we fight two enemies
The Russians and the cold
But it’s not just us, it’s cold for them
The enemy we shoot
They may have more bombs than us
But we have better boots
And we have better intel and better tech
And we trust our leaders’ decisions
Russia has more bombs than us
But we have more precision
We value life and value death
While Russian mad dogs foam
Russian soldiers forced to fight
We fight to save our homes
In two weeks we go home for rest
If not blown up by a bomb
I want to visit my Dad’s grave
But first, to hug my Mom
