Swimmin’ With The Jets

White clouds wispy, blue beyond

Swimmin’ with the jets today

Daydreamin’ salt-water creature last seen

Near the airport’s Reef Runway

Fighter jets takeoff, followed by a tanker

The sun’s still low in the east

I’m backstroking in the Diamond Head direction

Half man, half swimming beast

Started swimming regularly a couple years ago

Now I’m a regular old-man Tarzan lite

But chuggin’ on my back and staring at the sky

Feel like a young fella flyin’ a kite

I got the swimming badge in Boy Scouts

Back when I had a flat stomach

Last time I swam laps before now

I was eleven, at Camp Mattatuck

Life is a funny journey

So many twists and turns

How’d I wind up swimmin’ with the jets?

Not sure, but could be worse
