Hurry Kherson

On March 2, 2022, one week after the start of the war, Kherson was the the first major Ukrainian city to fall to Russia.

Hurry Kherson, come back home

We yearn with open arms

The devil’s boot is on your throat

But angels aren’t too far

The Russian Army is in retreat

Freedom on the rise

Ukrainians fight for family and friends

Russian troops are tricked with lies

Putin wants a land route to Crimea

Control of Kherson is the path

Kherson fell to Russians on March 2

Once home to 300,000, now barely half

In April Russia installed a new mayor

Ukrainian resistance in retreat

Deadly fire rains down on protests

Plain-clothes State Security roam the streets

Now the streets are mostly empty

Feel the Russian might

It’s illegal to gather in groups

And you can’t go out at night

Rape, torture, kidnapping

Occupation grim

Leaflets on an oak tree

Look for disappeared kin

But Ukraine’s counteroffensive is rolling

Exciting advances in the North

Attention now turns to Kherson

Before the winter frost

It’s not a question of if, but when

Kherson will be liberated

Ukraine’s military is superior

Russians are spent and hated

Putin orders not to retreat

But soldiers see the map

Get cut off from the Dnieper River

They’ll be trapped like Russian rats

Hurry Kherson, yes, we hear the call

Liberation is on the way

We hope to toast your good health

Upon this Christmas day

I heard a refugee from Kherson say

About her terrible journey

“I only believe in two things now

God and the Ukrainian army”
