Chelsea Manning is No Hero, and I Will Not Buy Her Book

Chelsea Manning, original name Bradley Edward Manning, (born December 17, 1987, Crescent, Oklahoma, U.S.), U.S. Army intelligence analyst who provided the Web site WikiLeaks with hundreds of thousands of classified documents in what was believed to be the largest unauthorized release of state secrets in U.S. history.

Manning was arrested and convicted in 2010, and sentenced to 35 years in prison. In 2014, a federal judge granted her request to formally change her name to Chelsea Elizabeth Manning. The Army also eventually allowed her to use makeup and receive hormone therapy. But it denied a plea to let her grow out her hair, which, according to photos posted on the GoFundMe site, remains trimmed into a side-swept, masculine cut. Manning’s attorneys disclosed in September that she had been approved for gender reassignment surgery. The assurances from the Army that she could have the procedure came two months after Manning tried to commit suicide, and after a hunger strike that lasted four days, the ACLU said. Her sentence was commuted before that surgery could take place.

Chelsea Manning’s got a new book coming out

Telling us what a hero she is

For leaking military secrets to WikiLeaks

While a soldier in Iraq

These secrets, it seemed to Chelsea

Were for the government to control the narrative

To hide the ugly truth

Of these never-ending wars

Yep, these wars were fucked up

We stayed way too long in Afghanistan

Shouldn’t have invaded Iraq at all

But when serving on the battlefront

A soldier can’t make that call

Chelsea likens herself to Daniel Ellsberg

Who released the Pentagon Papers during Viet Nam

But those papers didn’t divulge tactical information

Of ongoing military operations

Chelsea gave 750,000 documents to WikiLeaks

Who released them in different spurts

I wonder if Russia controlled WikiLeaks then

As our soldiers rolled in dirt

Chelsea was sentenced to 35 years in prison

But Obama commuted it after seven

Chelsea came out as a trans woman after convicted

And in prison was a cause celeb’

Oh Chelsea, my girl, you weren’t a whistleblower

Speaking out against the war

You betrayed fellow soldiers in the field

You are a traitor evermore
