Hong Kong Freedom Died Today

Hong Kong freedom died today

Well, maybe it took a couple of years

PRC keeps turning the vice

Crushing freedom’s gears

Yadda, yadda, yadda

Signed a treaty in ‘97

Supposed to honor Hong Kong rules

But who remembers way back then

The 2019 Hong Kong protests

Filled the world with awe

College students to the front once more

In freedom-loving thrall

You cannot win, you should not risk

Many used to tell ‘em

But they took the streets, held fast from force

With nothing but umbrellas

I love those Hong Kong kids

Who stood tall in the streets

We take our freedom for granted

They faced a cruel state’s teeth

New Hong Kong security law passed last year

No, not heaven sent

Any speech, assembly, writings the government doesn’t like

Now crushed as illegal dissent

And the Hong Kong courts won’t try you

Because the government may not win

They’ll ship you off for a mainland trial

Where the legal fix is in

No protests or banners or free internet speech

Listen to the Communists, only they can teach

What it means to be true Chinese

A new Hong Kong election law passed last month

Candidates must be pre-screened

For sufficient “patriotism”

Only good Communists can dream

We’ll tell you who represents you

Don’t worry ‘bout that vote

The Communist Party is all knowing

Careful now, don’t choke

And the last independent newspaper shut down this week

They raided the place and made arrests

Nobody left to do real reporting now

No truth for people to attest

The PRC wants to rewrite history, too

Tore down Hong Kong tributes to Tiananmen Square

But people will never forget those days

And what the Tank Man dared

Hong Kong democracy is dead and gone

Thanks to the PRC

Lord XI doesn’t like dissent

He’s getting ready for the Olympics, can’t you see

Hey Xi, how’s your tennis star

The one who cried sexual assault

What’s that, she’s not available for comment

Got her locked in some dark vault

Yeah, America’s democracy is pretty messed up now

Not in our best light, anyway

But we’ve still got more freedom in our pinky fingers

Than the PRC all day

The PRC may think it’s so powerful

Nobody can do it harm

But the exiled Chinese artist Badiucao

Has Tank Man on his arm

Yep, don’t sidestep and don’t regret

Be thorns in the PRC’s side

Like New Hampshire’s motto says

“Live Free or Die”

Happy New Year Hong Kong

I still stand with you

June 2019. Protesting against proposed new Hong Kong security law.
The 2019 Hong Kong protests were large, loud and proud, started by students, then joined by large swaths of the city. Ultimately, the protests were unsuccessful in stopping the PRC from shoving draconian anti-democratic laws down the throats of Hong Kong’s people.
Tank Man – A man blocks a line of tanks on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on June 5, 1989.
Jeff Widener, a photographer with the Associated Press, was focusing his camera on a line of tanks in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square when out of the blue came this man in a white shirt and dark trousers, carrying what appeared to be shopping bags.
At first, Jeff Widener was annoyed by the man entering his shot.
Little did he know that he was about to make one of the most iconic photos in history.

The Granite State rocks. Enough said.
