The Ice Cream Man Had No Plan

Bloody suicide-bomb bodies

Soldiers, civilians strewn asunder

A father’s fallen soldier son

A mother clutches a dead baby in a ditch

The withdrawal should have been smoother

We should have anticipated the Afghan collapse

But all you experts wanting to stay forever

You can collectively kiss my ass

We built an Afghan Army

Dependent on American contractors

Then pulled the plug, cut and run

Now wonder why it fractured

20 years of American-style war

Watch the new Afghanistan rise

I know you folks like to roll in tribes

But try democracy on for size

We pumped in billions every month

Built projects big and small

Contractors loved the endless flow

And grifters got the gall

An entire generation of Afghans

Grew up in American largesse

But when the ice cream man ain’t got a plan

The country’s in a mess

I’m sure hundreds of thousands of Afghans

Maybe millions, I’m not sure

Dread the thought of Taliban rule

Especially the girls

I’m not sure who promised what

We should save the Afghans we can

But sorry folks, when you lose a war

Everybody can’t move to the Promised Land

And all you TV generals

Wanting us to stay a few more years

Please shut up, you had your chance

It’s because of you we’re here
