The running back had plowed
His helmet through my shoulder
Derby’s all-state running back
Was like a rolling boulder
I stood and shook my dangling arm
A numbing stinging pain
Thoughts were swirling in my head
I should probably leave the game
It was midway through my sophomore year
I had recently won the spot
Starting corner on the left
Finally got my shot
But now I was hurt
Not sure if I should rest
When team captain came on up to me
Sensing my distress
Are you O.K., he asked
I said I wasn’t sure
Show me, can you move it?
I said, yeah, but it really hurts
He grabbed my face mask next to his
Keep moving, you’re O.K.
If you sub out now and hit the bench
It’s on the bench you’ll stay
Let’s go, huddle up!
He yelled for all to hear
Just one more stop, we got this game
The big guy had no fear
I followed him to the huddle
Forever glad I stayed
Team captain and my brother
I love you to this day
