Me and Rick, summer of ’81
Met up in San Francisco
Roving reporters on the beat, so to speak
Sitting on a wall at Fisherman’s Wharf
With ice cream cones
Enjoying the sunny day scene
A man walked toward us with a big colorful parrot on his shoulder
Rick said, gee, that’s so cool
Walking around with a parrot like that
King of the walk, that dude
Must be a hit with the ladies
Dude walked by, and from the back
The coin’s other side is seen
Bird shit smeared thick down jean-jacket back
Ladies, how you like me now
We laughed hard, mostly at ourselves
I still hold dear this true-life parable
The timeless lesson learned
Don’t rush to judgement
Be sure to analyze all sides of an issue
And perhaps most importantly:
The jean jacket is a hardy garment
Dude probably just hosed it down between strolls
Levi Strauss did us solid there
